Portugal, which has come through the crisis relatively well so far, yesterday declared a nationwide state of emergency because of the sharp rise in the number of infections there as well. The order is initially valid for 15 days starting today and allows the government to impose restrictions on freedom of movement and other drastic measures if necessary, said head of government Antonio Costa after a meeting with his cabinet in Lisbon, as the government announced.
He said that only a maximum of five people should be allowed to gather in public, that the maximum number of participants in private parties should be reduced to 50, that masks should be mandatory outside the home, and that the Corona warning app “Stay Away” should become mandatory at work and in schools. The parliament still has to approve the measures.
Increase in hospital patients
The situation is serious, Costa warned. The number of registered new infections within 24 hours rose today in the country of 10.3 million inhabitants to 2,072, the highest figure since the beginning of the pandemic. According to official figures, the total number of cases climbed to more than 91,000, and the number of people who died with Covid-19 rose by seven to 2,117.
The north and greater Lisbon area are particularly affected. Of particular concern is the fact that the number of Covid-19 patients treated in hospitals shot up from just over 300 to almost 1,000 in just over a month.
