With more than 400,000 new corona infections within one day, a record number has been registered since the outbreak of the pandemic. According to a census by the news agency AFP based on official figures on Friday, 404,758 new infections and 6086 deaths related to the corona virus were reported worldwide on Thursday. As of Friday, 1.1 million infected persons have died worldwide since the outbreak of the pandemic.
On Thursday alone, 150,000 new infections were registered in Europe, the highest number since the beginning of the pandemic. The average number of daily infections within a single week on the continent jumped by as much as 44 percent compared to the previous week to more than 121,000 cases.
Worldwide, 1.1 million of 38.9 million corona infected people have died so far. Almost one in five deaths occurred in the USA. With 217,798 deaths and 7,985,356 infections, the USA remains the country hardest hit by the pandemic.
The USA is followed by Brazil with a total of 152,460 deaths from 5.1 million infections. India ranks third with 112,161 deaths and 7.3 million coronavirus infections.
