In the EU and its major European partner countries, more than 200,000 people have now died in connection with Covid-19 disease. As reported on Sunday by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in its daily updated figures, there have been 200,587 reported deaths to date in the European Economic Area (EEA) including the UK, with almost 4.8 million confirmed corona infections.
Most of the deaths were registered in the United Kingdom (43,579), Italy (36,474), Spain (33,775), France (33,392), Belgium (10,392) and Germany (9,777). The figure for Austria was given as 907 (according to the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Health, 893 patients died in Austria with or as a result of Covid-19 by Sunday, 9:30 a.m.).
Lowest rates
Among the 15 countries in the region with the most total infections, Germany, together with Sweden, has by far the lowest infection and death rates in the past 14 days. For Austria (in 13th place for total infection numbers), 14-day incidences of ECDC were reported as 186.0 (Cobid-19 cases) and 1.1 (deaths) (for Germany 75.6 and 0.3; for Sweden 85.3 and 0.3).
In addition to the 27 EU member states, the EEA also includes Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein; the ECDC also includes the former EU member Great Britain. These figures therefore do not include Switzerland, which, according to the Stockholm-based center, has more than 74,000 infections and 1,822 deaths associated with Covid-19.
The ECDC figures also differ from those of WHO Europe, which includes 53 countries in the European Region, including Russia and Ukraine. By Sunday, WHO had recorded about 7.8 million infections in this region and nearly 255,000 related deaths.
