According to a Reuters census, global coronavirus cases exceeded the 40 million mark on Monday. The Reuters data is based on official reports from individual countries. Experts believe that the true numbers of both cases and deaths are likely to be much higher, due to testing deficiencies and the fact that some countries may not provide enough reports.
Reuters’ data show that the pace of the pandemic continues to increase. It has taken only 32 days to go from 30 million cases worldwide to 40 million compared to the 38 days it took to go from 20 million to 30 million, the 44 days between 10 and 20 million and the three months it took to reach 10 million cases since the first cases were reported in Wuhan, China, in early January.
At the end of last week, a record increase in new infections per day was recorded, with more than 400,000 cases reported within 24 hours for the first time. Last week, there was an average of about 347,000 cases per day, compared to 292,000 in the first week of October.
The United States, India and Brazil remain the worst affected countries in the world. Covid-19 cases in the Americas account for about 47.27%, or almost half, of all cases worldwide.
