In the Czech Republic, similar rules as in spring will apply again from Thursday. Only grocery stores, drugstores and pharmacies are allowed to open. The number of infections had recently exploded.
In view of the sharp rise in corona numbers, the Czech Republic is taking drastic measures that are tantamount to a nationwide lockdown. From Thursday morning onwards, almost all stores will have to close, as Health Minister Roman Prymula announced on Wednesday. Excluded are, among others, grocery stores, drugstores and pharmacies.
In addition, exit restrictions will be imposed as in spring: The government has ordered that people must limit their contacts with other people to the “absolutely necessary time”. This does not apply to the way to work, necessary shopping, visits to the doctor and family. Walks in parks and the great outdoors are also allowed.
Almost 12,000 cases in 24 hours
The number of infections in the Czech Republic has been rising dramatically for weeks. On Wednesday, a new peak in the number of daily new infections was reported. There were 11,984 confirmed cases within 24 hours. More than 1600 people have died in connection with or as a result of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. The EU member state has almost 10.7 million inhabitants. The Czech Republic is one of the countries with the highest infection rates per 100,000 inhabitants in Europe.
In view of the new measures, the compulsory wearing of masks outdoors, which came into force today, Wednesday, is almost a minor matter. A mouth and nose cover is mandatory within the built-up area of towns and municipalities. Exceptions apply, among other things, if a distance of more than two meters can be maintained, as well as for sports. Even in the car, a mask must be worn when non-family members are driving along.
