The number of new infections with the coronavirus within one day in the USA has risen to over 80,000 for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. Johns Hopkins University (JHU) recorded 83,757 new cases on Friday, about 12,000 more than the day before. In Germany, too, 14,714 new infections were registered within one day, more than ever before since the beginning of the pandemic. However, it must be taken into account that more testing is being done than in spring.
The number of deaths associated with Covid 19 disease in Germany also exceeded the 10,000 mark, and a two-week lockdown to contain the corona pandemic came into effect in Wales, UK, on Friday evening. In addition, several regions of England were placed on the highest alert level. This means that from now on 7.3 million Britons are subject to stricter measures.
Asia is the second region in the world after Latin America to exceed the ten million corona infections mark. This is around a quarter of the 42.1 million infections registered globally, according to a Reuters survey of official data. However, experts suspect a high number of unreported cases. At more than 163,000, the proportion of deaths is around 14 percent.
In Asia, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and the Philippines are particularly affected by the pandemic. China and New Zealand have managed to contain the virus, while Japan has been able to prevent it from spreading more rapidly. However, the number of new infections in India and Bangladesh has recently weakened somewhat.
