The corona numbers in Austria continue to rise. Minister of Health Rudolf Anschober (Greens) now made an appeal to the population.
The corona situation in Austria is getting worse and worse! In the last 24 hours alone, there have been a total of 2,835 confirmed cases, most of them in Lower Austria with almost 600 new infections. Due to the rapidly increasing numbers, scheduled operations in hospitals have to be postponed again in Upper Austria, and the number of intensive care patients in Austria has also increased.
The most important control instrument for health policy is currently the intensive care bed capacities. They must not become scarce. “This is not the case at present,” the Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday. However, this situation could change rapidly, as the examples from several European countries from the past few days show.
Three points were decisive for the utilization of intensive care beds: the development of infection rates, the protection of old people’s homes and nursing homes, and the protection of the health care system. Because if there are surprisingly strong outbreaks of infection in old people’s and nursing homes or in the health system, the demand for intensive care beds will rise rapidly on the one hand, and on the other hand there could be a significant reduction in personnel capacities.
Austria’s neighbor, the Czech Republic, has recently experienced this dramatically. According to current reports, there are now almost 13,000 infections in the healthcare system there.
Health Minister Rudi Anschober: “In the coming weeks, we will therefore pay special attention to protecting these two areas – the old people’s and nursing homes and the health care system – especially by massively increasing testing.
The third crucial point is the development of infection figures: If these continue to develop as dynamically as they did last week in Austria and for weeks now in many European countries, then the situation could rapidly deteriorate. The next few weeks will therefore be the phase of setting the course in Austria.
Anschober: “We must and can succeed in flattening out the current growth curve again and stabilizing the infection figures. My appeal therefore goes out to the population to recognize now the seriousness of the situation, to reduce contacts significantly, to implement the measures consistently and to install the Stop Corona App”.
And further: “If we implement all these measures, we can do it together.”
