Digitization in schools is to be promoted. For this reason, from the 2021/2022 school year onwards, mobile terminals such as notebooks and tablets will be available to fifth grade students at greatly reduced prices or even free of charge. Plans to this effect have been in place since before the summer, and this evening Education Minister Heinz Faßmann (ÖVP) sent the corresponding law for review.
There is another exception for the first year. Students who repeat the fifth grade as well as young people from the sixth grade can also benefit. The prerequisite for the state aid to take effect at a location is that a specific digitization concept exists there.
Parents must pay 25 percent of the purchase price, and the equipment becomes the property of the student. Families who receive a minimum benefit, compensatory allowance or emergency aid, are exempt from the fees, or where a sibling living in the same household has received an allowance under the School Allowance or Study Support Act the year before. In these cases the devices are free of charge.
End devices should also be made available to teaching staff as a learning aid. In the area of state teachers, who work in secondary schools, the states are to be given the opportunity to purchase digital devices for the 2021/22 and 2022/23 school years at a rate of three terminals per class participating for the first time in schools that are eligible for funding from the federal government.
