Every fifth coronavirus infection detected in the past week has affected a child between the ages of six and 14. This is shown by the current evaluation of the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES).

According to this, of the total of 12,668 infections confirmed by the authorities between September 27 and October 3, 2,530 – exactly 20 percent – were attributable to this age group.

Meanwhile, schoolchildren, apprentices and trainees, with a 7-day incidence of 331 cases per 100,000 population, have significantly outpaced 15- to 24-year-olds, who had the highest incidence during the summer.

Currently, adolescents and young adults have an incidence of 217.8. With 2,052 cases, 15- to 24-year-olds contribute 16.2 percent to the recorded incidence of infection. In absolute numbers, they are now even a notch behind 25- to 34-year-olds, who accounted for 16.3 percent of infections in the past week with 2,063 cases.

Vaccination rate stagnates
The fact that SARS-CoV-2 is increasingly affecting children is likely due to two factors: They are the only age group that is fully consistently tested through school testing. Thus, in contrast to other age groups, there is practically no underreporting, and even asymptomatic infections are detected.

In addition, vaccinations against Covid-19 are still not administered to those under 12 in Austria, and at the same time the vaccination rate continues to stagnate. Currently, just under 61 percent of the population is fully vaccinated.

As of Sunday, 1,663 people had been vaccinated. According to the Ministry of Health’s vaccination dashboard, that was just 40 more than on Dec. 29 of the previous year – two days after vaccination against the pandemic began in Austria in the first place and vaccine was still in short supply.

15.5 percent of those infected in the previous week were between 35 and 44 years old, and 12.8 percent were between 45 and 54. The fact that vaccination works is proven once again by a look at the older generation, where willingness to be vaccinated is greatest.

Only 7.6 percent of new infections occurred among the over-65s. In the group of the very old – persons older than 85 years – 153 cases were detected throughout Austria, which corresponded to 1.2 percent.
