The coronavirus vaccine from the German biotech company BioNTech and its U.S. partner Pfizer could be available even before the competing vaccine from AstraZeneca, according to a media report. This was reported yesterday by the newspaper “The Times” with reference to British government circles. The government in London assumes that the vaccine could be distributed before Christmas, the report said.
BioNTech and Pfizer had previously announced that if the study results were positive, they would submit the application for approval of their coronavirus vaccine at the end of November. Pfizer and BioNTech are among the leading pharmaceutical manufacturers in the race for a vaccine, along with the US company Moderna and the British company AstraZeneca.
Fauci: vaccine not before January
Meanwhile in the USA there will be no coronavirus vaccine before January according to the renowned immunologist Anthony Fauci. Clinical studies for two experimental vaccines are well advanced, but the granting of an emergency approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not expected before January, Fauci said yesterday in a video connection with the trade magazine “Jama Network”. Fauci said, “it could be January, it could be later, we don’t know”.
According to Fauci, the most advanced clinical studies are those for the vaccines of the biotech company Moderna and the study by Pfizer. For an emergency approval by the FDA, the manufacturers’ data would have to prove the tolerability and “continued efficacy” of their vaccine, Fauci said.
Fauci’s statement contradicted statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly promised that a vaccine will be available before the end of the year. Critics accuse Trump of instrumentalizing the early availability of a vaccine for his election campaign. The Republican Trump is running for a second term in the U.S. election on Tuesday.
