Austria’s corona situation is deteriorating dramatically. What the government is planning.

Vienna. All of Europe is in the middle of the second wave. This is the reason why lockdown-like conditions are occurring everywhere. Today there will be a video conference of the 27 EU heads of government.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz wants to quickly implement new measures to avert a collapse of the healthcare system. Austrian daily newspaper “Österreich reports that a “lockdown light” – similar to the situation in Germany, might be implemented in Austria. This should come into force at the beginning of November.

In the Zeit im Bild interview on Wednesday night Christoph Wenisch, of the infections management at the Klinik Favoriten is likewise convinced that a lockdown would be implemented soon.

Possible measures published by “Österreich” newspaper:

Contact restrictions on one person planned
Physical contacts: Soon the government will negotiate restrictions on contact, i.e. only meetings with another household outside the family. Meetings outside the family can also be restricted to a maximum of ten people. Whether this also applies to private parties and meetings in apartments – as is the case in Germany – is doubtful, however.
Events, theaters closed
Break/Leisure: In most countries, mass events have long been prohibited. That is to come now also limited in Austria. This means that opera, theater, cinema, but also professional soccer matches may no longer take place in front of an audience. How long this will apply is still open. The government is only allowed to limit a lockdown to 10 days, although some regulations may be longer. In Germany, the measures will apply for four weeks. This should break the infection.
Stores open, fitness centers closed and also restaurants
➔ Gastronomy/Trade: Trade is to remain completely open this time. However, the government plan is to temporarily close the gastronomy sector (restaurants, bars). Only take-away or delivery services may be offered. Fitness centers will also have to close.
Kindergartens and schools remain open
➔ Schools – “Kindergartens and schools should remain open even in the event of a lockdown,” clarified Education Minister Heinz Faßmann yesterday in an interview on oe24.TV. As in Germany, for example, this is a conscious socio-political decision. But: At least in the upper school, shift work and, if necessary, e-learning could be introduced again.
Hairdressers, doctor’ offices are open.
Lockdown light: Hairdressers could remain open this time, cosmetic treatments and all services with great proximity could be stopped at short notice. And importantly: medical practices would of course remain open.

Already today, the government leadership is meeting with experts – after which Chancellor Kurz could announce the necessary measures.
