In Poland, the number of daily new infections with the coronavirus has exceeded the 20,000 mark for the first time. Within 24 hours, 20,156 new cases were added, most of them (about 2,633) in the Wielkopolska region in the west of the country. In the same period 301 people died. This was announced by the Polish Ministry of Health today.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 5,149 deaths in Poland associated with Covid-19 disease. The country has about 38 million inhabitants.
One million infected in France
In France, the government estimates that around one million people have already become infected with the coronavirus. There was only “one common enemy”, and that was the virus, said Health Minister Olivier Veran on the France-Info channel.
Veran defended President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement yesterday of a nationwide lockdown, which is to take effect tomorrow. The government had tried by “all means” to avoid a new lockdown, and the night-time curfews imposed so far had also helped to slow down the spread of the virus.
But against the current “European wave” these were no longer sufficient. “We must get out of this second wave,” he added. He did not want to rule out even a “third wave”. The French must have “courage” and “patience”. In France, nearly 35,800 people died of Covid-19.
