Most of the new cases were reported in Lower Austria – which causes trouble for the authorities in that province. In the Salzburg town of Kuchl, the quarantine ends at the weekend.

The coronavirus is spreading rapidly in Austria. According to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of the Interior, 4453 new infections have been registered within 24 hours, most of them in Lower Austria. This is the highest figure since the outbreak of the pandemic. There is already speculation about a tightening of measures in Austria.

Late registration in Lower Austria
For the first time, a federal state has exceeded the 1,000 mark in new infections. In Lower Austria 1,074 cases were registered from Wednesday to Thursday. However, with 103 cases the day before, there were very few new infections in the federal state.

This is also confirmed by Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig, Health Councillor of Lower Austria. “In Lower Austria, 643 new infections within 24 hours were recorded as of 8:00 a.m. today,” she corrects today’s federal reports.

Apparently, a follow-up report by the federal government was included in this report, which was intended to correct the number of 103 new infections in Lower Austria published yesterday. “However, we had 516 new cases in Lower Austria yesterday and we had reported this development accordingly. In this respect it is very annoying that for weeks it has not been possible to communicate uniform figures. But especially now this is of great importance in order not to unnecessarily unsettle the population”, said Königsberger-Ludwig.

Significant increase in Vienna
If the figures are adjusted for late registrations, Vienna is still the federal state with the most new infections. 821 positive test results were registered, the city’s medical crisis management team announced. Moreover, since yesterday, Wednesday morning, eight people have died as a result of the coronavirus infection.

The victims are five women, all of whom were over 90 years old, and three men, aged between 71 and 76. This means that there are now 333 Covid-19-related deaths in the German capital.

Upper Austria is not far behind Vienna in terms of new infections with 796 cases. In the remaining provinces, 584 people in Tyrol, 355 in Styria, 276 in Vorarlberg, 262 in Salzburg, 166 in Carinthia and 119 in Burgenland were newly infected with SARS-CoV-2.
