Major police operation in Vienna City: Three dead confirmed, one perpetrator shot. Minister of the Interior speaks of a terrorist attack. Investigations underway
On Monday evening at about 8 p.m. a bloody terror attack took place in Vienna.
Shots were fired at six crime scenes in downtown Vienna. At least three people – two men, one woman – were killed, 15 others were injured. An officer on duty was also injured.
According to police commissioner Gerhard Pürstl, one perpetrator was shot dead by the police at 8:09 pm. The apartment of the assassin, a sympathizer of the terrorist organization IS equipped with an assault rifle and dummy explosives, was blown up and searched. The identity of the perpetrator could be established, but Minister of the Interior Karl Nehammer did not want to give any further details due to ongoing investigations.
At present, it cannot be ruled out that no other perpetrators were involved. Nehammer spoke in the morning of an “attack by at least one Islamist terrorist”. Intensive investigations are underway.
In a press conference, Nehammer called the attack an attack on Austrian democratic values. “Under no circumstances will we put up with that.”
The Minister of the Interior appealed to the Viennese, “if it is possible, stay at home! The city center should be avoided. Compulsory school attendance in the federal capital was suspended on Tuesday. If parents cannot look after their children, they can take them to an educational institution.
