Winter Time 2026: Clocks to Go Back on October 25

The next seasonal clock change is approaching, with daylight saving time set to end on October 25, 2026. On that date, clocks across much of Europe will be turned back by one hour, marking the return to winter time.

People looking to remember the date can follow the usual rule of thumb: the clock change takes place on the last Sunday of October. In 2026, that falls on October 25.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, clocks will be moved back from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m. The change marks the start of winter time, which is officially considered standard time.

For many, the switch means an extra hour of sleep. The clocks had previously been moved forward by one hour in March when daylight saving time began.

The practice of changing the clocks was introduced in Europe during the 1970s. One of the main reasons was the 1973 oil crisis, when policymakers hoped that making greater use of daylight would help reduce energy consumption.

However, Austria’s Federal Environment Agency has said that any potential savings in electricity use are largely offset by higher heating energy demand during cooler morning hours.

Many modern devices now adjust automatically when the clock change takes place. Smartphones, digital clocks and other internet-connected devices can update the time without user intervention, provided the automatic time-setting function is enabled.

Despite recurring public debate about whether seasonal clock changes should continue, the twice-yearly adjustment remains in place, meaning Europeans will once again set their clocks back by one hour on October 25, 2026.
