In view of rising coronavirus numbers, the US state of New York wants to use new restrictions to combat an impending relapse into the pandemic. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced yesterday (local time) that restaurants, bars and gyms will have to close at 22:00. In addition, meetings in private homes will be restricted to a maximum of ten people. The new regulations are to come into force on Friday, Cuomo announced.

“It really is getting worse every day,” said the governor, referring to new coronavirus highs in the US. If the new measures are not sufficient and the numbers “crazy” rise, there could also be a complete closure of indoor facilities, Cuomo said. New York’s mayor Bill de Blasio also spoke today of the “last chance” to prevent a second wave of coronavirus.

Daily new infections over 100,000
The state of New York and the metropolis of the same name on the US East Coast had become the epicenter of the pandemic in the USA in spring. Over the summer, the incidence of infection there had stabilized, but recently the situation had become tense again.

On Monday, the number of coronavirus infections in the USA with its 330 million inhabitants had exceeded the ten million mark since the beginning of the pandemic. According to statistics from Johns Hopkins University, the number of new infections has been well over 100,000 for a week now, and more than 240,000 people have died in the United States following infection.
