Already in the morning many Austrians took advantage of this for shopping. There were long queues in front of stores and traffic jams on the side streets. On Mariahilfer Strasse, many people went shopping – in front of some stores you even had to queue.
Already in the morning there was much more going on than on a “normal” Monday, until noon the shopping street was noticeably filled up. The big run after almost three weeks of lockdown did not happen for the time being.
Queues formed in front of individual stores and banks
There were long lines in the morning infront of individual stores and banks – they were gratefully documented by numerous camera teams who wanted to capture the mood. In large branches, some of which offer high discounts, security personnel were to ensure that the process was regulated. According to passers-by, however, this is only partially successful. Often the rules of distance are not observed, and even some masks that are sitting incorrectly have been spotted while shopping.
Tomorrow, Tuesday and the coming Advent Saturdays, Innere Mariahilfer Strasse and a section of Neubaugasse will be closed to vehicle traffic. This is to create more space for the feared crowds of people.
Minister of the Interior Nehammer already announced in the run-up to the reopening that the police will increasingly check the shopping streets and pedestrian zones for offences against the Corona rules.
