VIENNA, AUSTRIA – November 8, 2026 – Today at 6:00 PM, the vernissage for PARATETHYS / PAKIKIRAMDAM (Sensing the Sea) opens at Operngasse 4, presenting a site-specific installation selected as part of the Special Projects for VIENNA ART WEEK 2026.
Curated by Klaus Speidel alongside co-curator Ken Mapayo, the exhibition engages directly with this year’s festival theme, Navigating Angst, running from November 6 to 13, 2026.
Exhibition Background & Concept
Paratethys / Pakikiramdam (Sensing the Sea) bridges deep geological time with contemporary human emotion, ecological awareness, and cultural resonance.
- Paratethys (The Ancient Inland Sea): The title references the prehistoric Paratethys Sea” an ancient body of water that once covered vast stretches of Eurasia, including the Vienna Basin, before receding millions of years ago. By invoking this forgotten geography, the installation explores themes of memory, submerged histories, and environmental transformation.
- Pakikiramdam (Sensing / Shared Perception): Rooted in the Tagalog concept of pakikiramdam”an intuitive, non-verbal sensing of others and one’s surroundings” the artwork invites visitors to perceive space and vulnerability beyond mere visual observation. It encourages an empathetic, heightened awareness of ecological change and emotional landscape.
Through its site-specific design at Operngasse 4, the exhibition transforms the spatial environment into a reflective sanctuary, offering a nuanced response to Navigating Angst by confronting uncertainty with deep listening, sensory connections, and shared presence.
