Following the first emergency approval for a coronavirus vaccine in the U.S., U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has promised his countrymen first vaccinations this weekend. “The first vaccine will be administered in less than 24 hours,” Trump announced yesterday.
He said his administration had already begun sending the vaccine, made by Mainz-based pharmaceutical company Biontech and US-based Pfizer, to all US states. Their governors would decide to whom the vaccines would be administered there first.
Free vaccination
Trump stressed vaccinations would be free for all Americans. Referring to the vaccine’s development in record time, he said, “This is one of the greatest scientific achievements in history.” He said the vaccine will save millions of lives “and soon end the pandemic once and for all.”
Trump presented the development as a success of his administration, but that is not accurate. The president went on to say, “The pandemic may have started in China, but we’re ending it right here, in America.”
Pandemic out of control
Republican Trump lost the Nov. 3 U.S. election to Democrat Joe Biden. Experts attribute that in part to Trump’s crisis management of the pandemic, which Americans give a poor report card in polls. Biden is scheduled to be sworn in on Jan. 20. The Democrat plans to launch a 100-day plan to fight the coronavirus immediately after.
The pandemic remains out of control in the United States. On Wednesday, the number of deaths on a single day had exceeded 3,000 for the first time. The number of registered new infections was more than 200,000 in each of the past few days, according to statistics from Johns Hopkins University.
