A Corona vaccine has been approved in the US for the first time. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted emergency approval to the vaccine from Mainz-based biotech company BioNTech and its partner Pfizer on Friday evening. This is valid for people 16 years and older, the FDA announced. The first vaccinations are expected within days. U.S. President Donald Trump promised an even faster deployment. “The first vaccination will be administered in less than 24 hours,” Trump said in a video on Twitter. He said he was proud to say the vaccine was free for all Americans.

The vaccine had cleared a key hurdle for approval on Thursday after the FDA’s independent Vaccine Advisory Committee voted overwhelmingly in favor of approval. Based on that recommendation, FDA approval was already expected to come quickly. This makes it the first Covid 19 vaccine available in the United States. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) plans to complete its evaluation of the companies’ application for a conditional marketing authorization by Dec. 29 at the latest.
