The death toll related to coronavirus in Italy has risen slightly. On Monday, 491 people were reported to have died from or with covid-19. This is seven more than the previous day. This means that the number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in Italy exceeded the 65,000 threshold and rose to 65,011. As of the weekend, Italy is the European country with the most coronavirus deaths, ahead of the United Kingdom.

The number of new infections registered in Italy dropped from 17,938 to 12,030 within 24 hours, with 103,584 tests performed within 24 hours, 11.6 percent of which were positive. The number of Covid 19 patients treated in hospitals increased from 27,735 to 27,765, the Ministry of Health in Rome reported. The number of patients in intensive care units fell from 3,154 to 3,095, and 644,249 people are currently in home isolation.

The Italian government has adopted strict travel restrictions over the Christmas holidays. Travel between Italian regions is to be possible from Dec. 21 to Jan. 7 only for work-related, health-related and other emergency reasons. On December 25 and 26, as well as on December 31 and January 1, people will not be allowed to leave their own place of residence. It is expected that the measures will be further tightened in the coming days.
