U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s victory over incumbent Donald Trump has been formally certified by a majority of the electoral college. “The flame of democracy was lit in this nation long ago,” Biden said in his speech marking his victory in the Electoral College (“Electoral College”) yesterday (local time). “And we now know that nothing – not even a pandemic or an abuse of power – can extinguish that flame.” In “this battle for the soul of America,” he said, democracy prevailed.
In the state-by-state vote, the Democrat won a majority of the 538 electors by more than 270 votes. The usually little-noticed formality in the U.S. presidential election took on special significance this year because of Trump’s unproven allegations of massive fraud. However, it was considered out of the question that enough election people would break with their guidelines from the election to take away Biden’s victory. He had won the Nov. 3 vote with 306 electors.
Trump declared late last month that he would leave the White House if the Electoral College voted for Biden, but has yet to concede a Biden victory. Rather, he most recently repeated a series of unsubstantiated claims. “Swing states that have found massive voter fraud cannot legally certify those votes as complete and accurate without committing a severely punishable crime,” he wrote on Twitter.
