The European Union is planning to allocate 500 million euros to supply poorer countries with Corona vaccines. With it one billion doses of vaccine can be purchased, the EU diplomatic mission said today. 400 million euros will come from the European Investment Bank, and 100 million euros from the EU Commission.

The money will go to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Covax vaccine initiative, which supports research on numerous vaccine candidates and aims to ensure fair distribution of successful vaccines. More than 180 countries are involved; in addition to EU countries, China is also represented, but not the United States. More than 90 countries fund the purchase of vaccines themselves, while 92 are to be supported.

According to the head of the vaccine alliance Gavi, Seth Berkley, another five billion dollars would have to be raised to ensure that everyone worldwide who needs it can be vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2.
