More than 500,000 people have been vaccinated against coronavirus in the United Kingdom so far, according to Prime Minister Boris Johnson. “This is a cause for hope and confidence,” Johnson said today in London. “We can look forward to a whole new world starting at Easter.” Mass vaccination with the drug from German pharmaceutical company Biontech and its U.S. partner Pfizer had begun two weeks ago.
However, the new variant of the coronavirus, about which the British authorities had informed over the weekend, is causing concern. The impression that the virus was spreading more rapidly had “intensified,” said the government’s science adviser, Patrick Vallance. Because of an increase in private contacts, he said, it was “inevitable” that there would be a further increase in new infections in the coming weeks.
