Several Vienna Public Transport Lines to Resume Regular Service in
Vienna — A series of major summer construction projects across Vienna’s public transport network is nearing completion, allowing multiple tram and metro lines to return to their regular routes throughout August. According to Wiener Linien, all works remain on schedule, enabling passengers to benefit from several key service restorations before the end of the month.
Metro and Tram Lines Returning to Normal Operations
The first major reopening has already taken place:
- U4 resumed full service on 3 August, once again operating along its entire route.
More lines will follow in the coming weeks:
- 17 August: Tram 31 returns to its regular route between Schottenring and Stammersdorf.
- 22 August: Trams 5, 12, 37, 38, 40, 41, and 42 resume service over the newly renovated intersection at Spitalgasse–Währinger Straße–Nußdorfer Straße.
- On the same day, lines D, 1, and 71 return to their usual path along Universitätsring.
- 29 August: Tram 43 resumes its full route to Neuwaldegg.
- 31 August: Metro U3 completes the sequence, returning to uninterrupted service between Ottakring and Simmering.
Wiener Linien emphasized that these reopenings mark a significant step toward restoring full network stability after weeks of summer construction.
Road Construction Also Progressing
Progress is also visible on several major roadworks across the city:
- At the Floridsdorfer Brücke, the ramp connecting to the A22 from the 20th district reopened on 8 August. Remaining restrictions will stay in place until the end of the school holidays.
- From 18 August, new traffic rules take effect at the intersection of Brünner Straße, Lundenburger Gasse, and Shuttleworthstraße:
- From Brünner Straße, only straight‑ahead or right turns are permitted.
- From Lundenburger Gasse and Shuttleworthstraße, only right turns are allowed.
- On the Margaretengürtel, the main lanes are expected to be fully passable again by the end of the holiday period. Additional sealing work on the U‑STRAB tunnel will follow in September.
Step‑by‑Step Return to Normality
With several major projects concluding on time, Vienna’s public transport system is gradually returning to full capacity. The phased reopenings throughout August are expected to ease travel for thousands of daily commuters and restore key connections across the city.
