While vaccination promises hope for normality, numbers of newly infected are skyrocketing in numerous countries across Europe. Experts warned against gatherings over the Christmas holidays. Now the predictions have come true:
40 percent of tests in the Czech Republic turned out positive in recent days. On Monday, authorities recorded 6220 new infections within 24 hours. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 12,070 infected people have died in the Czech Republic. That is almost twice as many as here in Austria. The Czech Republic has 10.7 million inhabitants.
Although our neighbors have been in lockdown since December 27, the effects of the measures will not be felt for another ten days.
Scotland is going into lockdown again due to rising Corona sickness. For many days in a row, over 2600 people have tested positive for the virus. Schools are to remain closed until early February.
The Netherlands is also registering rising new infections. The situation in hospitals has now become so acute that the military is having to help out.
