In the U.S., 283,204 coronavirus infections have been reported within one day, the second highest number since the pandemic began. According to data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in Baltimore this morning (CET), the number of daily coronavirus deaths was 3,534 people.

The previous day, the death toll had risen above 4,000 for the first time. The previous highest level of new infections had been recorded a week ago, on January 2, with 301,858 within 24 hours, according to JHU.

More than 20 million cases
In total, more than 21.87 million people have been infected with the coronavirus in the country of about 330 million people. Since the pandemic began, more than 368,900 people have died with the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen, more in absolute numbers than any other country in the world.

The Johns Hopkins website is updated regularly and therefore shows a higher level than the official figures from the World Health Organization (WHO). In some cases, the numbers – including new infections within 24 hours, but also deaths – are updated after the fact.

According to the CDC, more than 6.6 million people have been vaccinated with a first dose of vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer or Moderna since December 13, 2020.
