More than 18,000 new corona infections in Belgium

Belgium, severely affected by the corona pandemic, reports a new record level of new infections. For Tuesday last week (October 20), the number was 18,217 according to new calculations, the spokesman of the crisis center, Yves van Laethem, told the press in Brussels on Monday. The figure for 20 October had initially been given as 15,432 over the weekend.

For Belgium, the Sciensano public health institute put the average number of new infections per day for the period from October 16 to 22 at 12,491, an increase of 44 percent over the previous week. The 14-day incidence reached 1,288.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, an increase of 220 percent over the previous two weeks.

Over 10,000 deaths with coronavirus
So far, 10,810 people have died in this country of 11.5 million inhabitants from or with Covid-19. According to the American Johns Hopkins University, Belgium has one of the highest death rates worldwide, with 94 corona deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. In total, there have been 321,031 infections with the corona virus in Belgium since the beginning of the pandemic, most of them in the provinces of Liège (Liege), Brussels and Hainaut.

In the fight against the pandemic, further tightening of the rules came into force in the Brussels region on Monday. Masks are now compulsory everywhere, and the night-time curfew begins at 10 p.m. instead of midnight. The Flemish regional government wanted to discuss measures on Tuesday evening. According to the Belga news agency, the Walloon Minister-President Elio Di Rupo did not rule out “additional measures” on Monday.
