German health departments have reported 7,141 new Corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. In addition, 214 new deaths were recorded in Germany within 24 hours, the RKI announced early Monday. On Mondays, the recorded case numbers are usually lower because less testing is done on weekends. Exactly a week ago, the RKI had recorded 12,497 new infections and 343 new deaths within 24 hours.

“After a sharp increase in case numbers in early December, a decline during the holidays and a renewed increase in the first week of January, case numbers appear to be stabilizing again,” the RKI wrote in its situation report Sunday evening. The peak of 1244 new deaths had been reached on Thursday. The highest number of new infections registered within 24 hours, 33,777, was reported on December 18 – but this included 3,500 subsequent reports.

According to the RKI, the number of new infections reported within seven days per 100,000 inhabitants (seven-day incidence) was 134.4 on Monday morning, having reached its previous high of 197.6 on December 22. The figure fluctuated thereafter and has been falling again for several days.

The nationwide seven-day R value was 0.93 (previous day: 0.95), according to the RKI situation report on Sunday evening. This means that 100 infected people mathematically infect 93 other people.
