539 positive samples from all over Vienna were examined by PCR for the presence of the mutations N501Y and Del69/70 specific for the virus mutation B.1.1.7. In 66 of the samples, these mutations could indeed be detected. “The proportion of the mutant variant in the positive samples is about 12 percent. This shows that B.1.1.7. has arrived in Austria.

Since no systematic testing of the mutation has been carried out in Austria so far, it is unfortunately impossible to say how long this mutation of the Covid 19 virus has been present in Austria,” Vienna City Health Councillor Peter Hacker said in a statement.

The tests were conducted at the Medical University of Vienna in the Clinical Institute of Laboratory Medicine and the Center for Virology, respectively. “Further investigations are necessary to monitor the future spread of the new variant B.1.1.7, so we will closely monitor further developments on a weekly basis,” said Robert Strassl of the Clinical Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Stephan Aberle of the Center for Virology at the Medical
University of Vienna.
