In Italy, the number of people who have died with or from coronavirus has risen again. On Monday, 307 deaths were counted in 24 hours, up from 270 the previous day. The number of new infections fell from 11,380 to 7,970, the health ministry said. Meanwhile, a lockdown was imposed in the province of Perugia. Several cases of both the British and Brazilian virus mutations were detected there.
Also in some municipalities of the neighboring province of Terni, the rules of the Red Zone will apply from Monday for a little more than two weeks. Public life will thus be very much restricted. Bars, restaurants and most stores will be closed. People are no longer allowed to eat or drink in public spaces and are only supposed to leave their homes for necessary things, such as shopping or doctor’s appointments. Almost all students must return to attending classes from home via the Internet. Kindergartens will remain closed. The entire Umbria region is in the Orange Zone anyway, with stricter corona rules.
The number of Covid 19 patients treated in Italian hospitals rose from 19,266 to 19,527 within 24 hours, with 2,143 people treated in intensive care units, 36 more than on Sunday. 144,270 swabs were taken; 5.5 percent were positive. Since vaccination began Dec. 27, 2.58 million people have been immunized in Italy. A total of 91,580 people have died in Italy in connection with the virus.
