Second impeachment trial against Trump begins

The Senate hearing begins Tuesday afternoon (local time/19:00 CET) and is expected to take several days. The ex-president is accused of “incitement to riot” over the storming of the Capitol by his supporters in early January. If convicted, the 74-year-old could be barred from future federal offices.
That would thwart Trump’s possible plans to run in the 2024 presidential election. But the two-thirds majority needed for a conviction is not on the horizon: for that, 17 Republicans would have to vote with the 50 Democrats. But a vote on an admissibility question had indicated that only a handful of Republicans are likely to consider voting for a conviction.

Trump’s lawyers again rejected the allegations Monday, calling the proceedings “unconstitutional.” Trump no longer holds public office, which is why the Senate cannot bring impeachment proceedings, they said. Democrats, however, argue that the ex-president should be held accountable for his actions – also as a warning to future presidents. In addition, they want to obtain a ban from holding office.
