A new variant of the coronavirus has been discovered in the Brazilian Amazon. This mutant is probably three times more contagious than the original virus, Brazil’s Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello announced yesterday (local time). Despite the strong risk of infection, the minister assured: “Thank God, the analysis has shown that the vaccines are also effective against this variant.”
However, the Ministry of Health did not provide data from this analysis so far. Pazuello said infections in the jungle city of Manaus had risen unexpectedly in recent months but were being brought under control.
At a Senate hearing, the minister said Brazil would vaccinate half of the vaccine-eligible population by June and the rest by the end of the year. However, the country currently has only secured vaccine doses to cover half of its population.
