The British government has reached its self-imposed goal of vaccinating at least 15 million residents against Corona by mid-February. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday called it a “milestone.” “This country has achieved an extraordinary feat,” the head of government tweeted Sunday. Nadhim Zahawi, the secretary of state in charge, tweeted, “15,000,000! Great team.”

Johnson had issued this figure at the beginning of the year as a stage goal for Feb. 15. Officials say – as of Friday – more than 14.56 million people have received a first dose. But with several hundred thousand vaccinations administered each day, it stands to reason that the 15 million threshold has now been surpassed. Meeting the target is considered the first real success of Johnson’s administration in the Corona pandemic.

Britain had begun mass vaccination on Dec. 8. Three vaccines are now being used. However, only about 535,000 people have received a second dose, which experts say will allow for full protection. Above is a picture of Prime Minister Johnson on a visit to a biotechnology lab on Saturday, which is not directly related to the news story – but, I think, is still worth seeing.
