Honors for Austria’s largest hospital, Vienna General Hospital (AKH): the hospital has earned recognition in the eyes of U.S. news magazine Newsweek and data provider Statista.
The hospital and its clinics at MedUni Vienna landed in 27th place on the list of 200 top hospitals in 25 states (a total of 2,000 hospitals evaluated). In second place for Austria is Innsbruck University Hospital (49).
These are the best hospitals in the world
Most of the rich industrialized countries (USA, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France Italy, Switzerland, Israel, etc.) are the home countries of the listed hospitals. “These countries were chosen mainly for their wealth and life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals and accessible data,” the U.S. news magazine now wrote.
The hospital rankings are based on these factors
Three data sources were primarily used: Recommendations from an international team of experts, patient surveys and existing healthcare key performance indicators (KPIs). Detailed rankings were created for the first hundred hospitals. For 101 to 200, inclusion in this group is considered the result. 350 of the approximately 2,000 hospitals studied are in the United States. “The ratings are only comparable within hospitals from the same country because different sources of patient experience and performance measures were examined depending on the country,” according to the notes on the methods.
However, a true ranking was created for the top one hundred hospitals. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester (U.S. state of Minnesota) topped the list, with the Clevelend Clinic in Ohio (U.S.) in second place. Third place went to Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston), which is also world-renowned in the field of medicine.
World’s best hospitals: 27th place for Vienna General Hospital
In sixth place is the first hospital from a German-speaking country, the Charite in Berlin (7th place: Karolinska University Hospital Stockholm). Twelfth place is taken by the University Hospital Zurich.
The Vienna AKH came in 27th. With around 77,500 inpatient admissions and 460,000 outpatient cases (outpatient frequency: 1.2 million visits), Austria’s largest hospital with the clinics of MedUni Vienna is also a real “big player” internationally. In comparison to US hospitals, it must also be taken into account that the Mayo Clinic and many similar facilities are private hospitals.
Finally, LKH Innsbruck and its university hospitals occupy 49th place on the list. LKH Graz, Salzburg and Linz, also university hospitals, are ranked between 100 and 200 by “Newsweek” in the group of best hospitals.
