After the deadliest week so far in the pandemic, Brazil has registered another high in CoV deaths recorded in one day. 1,972 people died in 24 hours, according to data released yesterday by the Ministry of Health in Brasilia. The previous high was 1,910 deaths last Wednesday, up from 1,641 on Tuesday. This brings the total number of Covid-19-related deaths in Brazil to 268,370.
Newly infected 70,764 people brought the number of CoV-infected people in Latin America’s largest country, with a population of more than 210 million, to more than 11.1 million. Only in the U.S. and India are the numbers higher. Brazil, which only began vaccinations in January, is one of the countries most affected by the pandemic.
P.1 mutation a factor in increasing spread
According to Fiocruz, a research organization, the intense circulation of people and the increasing spread of Sars-CoV-2 have favored the emergence of “variants of concern” in Brazil, such as the new P.1 variant that appears to have emerged in the Amazon.
President Jair Bolsonaro, who downplayed the coronavirus from the start and has since also cast doubt on the wisdom of vaccination, continues to reject restrictions for economic reasons. Local politicians have recognized the seriousness of the situation and have tightened measures against a rapid spread of the coronavirus.
