British coronavirus mutation now dominant in Vienna, Austria

The British coronavirus mutation (B.1.1.7) is now the dominant variant in Vienna. According to the medical crisis team, around 70 percent of infection cases are currently attributable to this type, it said Tuesday. There are also “16 active cases” of the South African mutation (B.1.351), it said.

So far, a total of 97,146 coronavirus infections have been reported in Vienna, according also to a dispatch from the crisis management team. Of these, 374 positive tests were added to the past 24 hours – although this also includes 22 follow-up reports from the previous days.

Already 1,736 coronavirus deaths since the beginning of the pandemic
Furthermore, 1,736 deaths have been documented due to or as a result of Covid-19. There have been seven deaths in the past 24 hours. There are 89,681 people who are healthy again. As of yesterday, Monday, 78,645 tests had been performed. In total, 3,607,954 tests have been performed in Vienna since the beginning of the pandemic.

The increase in intensive care patients in the hospitals of the federal capital is strikingly strong: according to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of the Interior, 126 sick people are being cared for in intensive care units – eight more than yesterday, Monday, and 35.5 percent or 33 people more than a week ago. Austria-wide, the increase was 14.2 percent. A total of 445 people currently require hospital care in Vienna due to Covid-19.
