The Corona situation continues to worsen – especially in eastern Austria. There, new measures are expected to be announced before the end of Wednesday. As the figures from the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Health show, they are also necessary. Vienna and Lower Austria recorded significant increases in intensive care patients. Austria-wide, the number of patients in intensive care units rose by ten to 447 since Tuesday. Authorities also reported 3,289 new infections.

In the federal capital, eight intensive care patients have been added since Tuesday. Thus, 176 Covid 19 sufferers already require intensive care in Vienna, the highest number since the pandemic began more than a year ago. In Lower Austria, six more patients have had to be admitted to intensive care units since Tuesday, and a total of 91 infected patients are being cared for there. The previous high was reached on November 25 with 115.

More people hospitalized
The total number of people hospitalized has also continued to rise. On Wednesday, 2,086 people were hospitalized throughout Austria, 37 more than on Tuesday. Within a week, there were 235 more infected people, an increase of 13 percent. In terms of intensive care beds, 47 critically ill patients were added in the past seven days, up from exactly 400 Covid 19 sufferers receiving intensive care a week ago.

The seven-day incidence per 100,000 population rose to 247.7 nationwide on Tuesday (Tuesday: 247.1). Within the past week, 22,045 new infections had been recorded. On average, 3,149 people became infected with SARS-CoV-2 every day last week, and 33,521 people were confirmed active cases nationwide on Wednesday – 602 more than on Tuesday. Thus, 710 more active cases were added daily last week.

102.8 deaths per 100,000 population
Since Tuesday, a further 30 fatalities have been recorded. Austria-wide, 9,151 people have thus died as a result of coronavirus infection. Within the past week, 195 deaths were registered. Per 100,000 inhabitants, 102.8 people have already died from or with covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

In Austria, 523,269 people have tested positive so far. 480,597 are considered to have recovered. If the more than 9,100 fatalities are excluded, 5.8 percent of Austrians have already been infected with the virus. The 3,289 new infections were again contrasted by significantly fewer – 2,657 – newly recovered people on Wednesday.

Exactly one year ago – Austria was then in the first, then also actually hard lockdown – 875 new infections were reported, by the way. The entire country recorded 50 coronavirus deaths by that time. The number of confirmed active cases was 4,876 with very few tests at that time. Exactly 166 SARS-CoV-2 infected people were in hospitals. Of those, a total of 17 required intensive care on March 24, 2020.

High numbers of tests were reported again on Wednesday. A total of 300,842 PCR and rapid antigen tests were reported in the past 24 hours. Of those, 61,750 were conclusive PCR tests, and the positive rate was 5.3 percent. On average, 53,884 reliable PCR smears – were examined daily during the past week, of which 5.8 percent were positive.

More than one million Austrians vaccinated
More than one million people in Austria have been vaccinated at least once. The 1,013,332 people thus represent 11.4 percent of the total population. From Monday to Tuesday, 30,017 vaccinations were added. Fully immunized 341,362 people have been vaccinated so far, representing 3.8 percent. The partially immunized and already confirmed infected thus account for 17.2 percent of the population. According to experts, however, the number of unreported cases of immunization is likely to be significantly higher.
