In the midst of a worsening pandemic, Brazil has for the first time registered more than 4,000 victims infected with the coronavirus in one day. Within 24 hours, 4,195 coronavirus-related deaths had been reported, the health ministry of Latin America’s largest country announced yesterday. On previous days, the numbers were significantly lower. According to media reports, numerous deaths from the Easter holidays have now been subsequently reported.
So far, only the U.S. had reported more than 4,000 deaths per day. In Brazil, the pandemic is largely out of control about a year after it began. In many parts of the country, the healthcare system is on the verge of collapse. In the face of increasing criticism of President Jair Bolsonaro’s crisis management, the ex-military man recently reshuffled his cabinet.
To date, more than 13 million people in the country of 211 million people have been confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus, and nearly 337,000 patients have died in connection with the virus. Most recently, scientists had also identified a new variant of the coronavirus.
