More than one million people have died in Europe after infection with the corona virus since the start of the Corona pandemic.

A total of 1,000,288 deaths of Corona-infected people had been recorded in the continent’s 52 countries and territories by Monday evening, AFP news agency calculated based on official figures.

Europe is thus the region with the highest number of victims of the pandemic, followed by Latin America with 832,577 deaths and North America with 585,428 deaths.

Within Europe, the UK is the hardest hit country with 127,100 Corona deaths, followed by Italy with 114,612 deaths and Russia with an official 103,263 deaths. Behind them are France with 99,163 deaths and Germany with 78,452 deaths.

However, developments in individual countries vary widely. For example, the vaccination campaign in Great Britain is already well advanced. Around 60 percent of Britons have received at least one vaccination dose. Together with an initial hard lockdown, this has reduced the number of daily Covid-19 deaths in the UK by 95 percent and infections by 90 percent since January.

In the past seven days, 238 infected people have died in the United Kingdom, compared with up to 8,700 deaths in one week in January. Other countries such as Italy, France and Russia, however, are being hit with full force by the third wave of Corona.

Worldwide, more than 136 million Corona infections and around 2.94 million deaths have already been recorded.
