Vaccination leads to a reduction in CoV deaths in Austria

With the progress in the oldest population groups, the effect of vaccination on the number of hospitalizations and especially deaths can be seen. This is because in the group where vaccination has progressed the most, these are decreasing significantly. Thus, for the first time, the proportion of CoV deaths among those over 84 years of age is lower than that of 65-74 year olds.

The day this happened was Saturday, May 1. On that day, for the first time, the proportion of 65- to 74-year-olds in the total number of deaths published daily by the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) was higher than that of those over 84.

With second vaccination, still big difference
And that this has to do with vaccinations is at least suggested by the temporal trend. According to the national vaccination schedule, the population is prioritized by descending age. This means that vaccination is particularly advanced among those over 84 years of age – about 60 percent have already received two vaccinations. In contrast, among 65- to 74-year-olds, less than 20 percent have received both vaccinations. For first-time vaccination, however, the ratio is now much more balanced – about 70 percent versus about 65 percent.

However, a time lag must be taken into account here: the vaccination protection must first build up after the vaccination, which takes several weeks. And vaccination of 65- to 74-year-olds was not prioritized until late March, when this group already accounted for by far the largest proportion of CoV patients in intensive care units.

More than three million doses delivered
More than three million doses of vaccine have been delivered in this country so far. More than 2.3 people have now received at least the first partial vaccination, and more than 860,000 have full vaccination protection.

In February – just a few weeks after the start of the vaccination campaign – it was already clear on the basis of the data available that vaccination leads to a reduction in CoV deaths – at that time primarily in the group of people over 84 years of age.
