In India, the Ministry of Health today recorded 362,727 new infections within 24 hours. This brought the total number of confirmed infections to 23.7 million. 4,120 more people died with or from the coronavirus. This brings the total to 258,317 deaths related to the virus. A daily record of 4,205 deaths was set yesterday.
Experts believe that the actual number of cases of infection and death in the country, which has a population of around 1.4 billion, is much higher. Particularly in rural areas, where two-thirds of India’s population live, the virus currently seems to be spreading unchecked. There are at least “three or four times more deaths” than officially reported, said independent health researcher Anant Bhan, according to AFP.
