In the past 24 hours, 1,394 new SARS-CoV-2 infections have been reported in Austria. In addition, 31 more deaths have been reported, meaning that 10,291 people have already died as a result of infection since the pandemic began. The number of intensive care patients continued to decline, but there was an increase in the total number of infected people treated in hospital. 1,617 people infected with Covid-19 currently require hospital care.
The 1,394 new infections are below last week’s average, when 1,775 new cases were added daily. On Monday – the day on which retail and body-related service providers also reopened in Vienna and Lower Austria – more than 85,000 conclusive PCR tests were evaluated throughout Austria within 24 hours, of which 1.9 percent were positive.
This was significantly more than were last analyzed per day; on average, more than 66,000 smears were analyzed daily, with a positive rate of 2.7 percent. In April, the average was 63,000 PCR tests per day. More than 66,000 of the analyses since Monday were performed in the federal capital of Vienna alone. The seven-day incidence on Tuesday was 139.6 cases per 100,000 population.
