Virologist Christian Drosten estimates that the population in Germany will become immune to the coronavirus in approximately the next year and a half. This will happen through vaccination or natural infection, the Charité Berlin scientist said in the podcast “Coronavirus Update” (NDR-Info) on Tuesday. “This virus will become endemic, this will not go away. And anyone who actively decides against getting vaccinated now, for example, will inevitably become infected.” There is nothing that can be done about that, he said, as measures are scaled back over time.
After that, he said, the virus circulates in the population, for example, unnoticed in the throats of vaccinated people and in younger children who cannot yet be vaccinated. “The virus will continue to spread undetected under a blanket of immune protection. And then it always hits people who are not immunized by vaccination, who are fully susceptible.”
As a result, the virologist believes there will still be Covid 19 cases in intensive care units this coming winter. He believes “those who actively choose not to vaccinate, they need to know that by doing so, they are also actively choosing natural infection. Without any judgment,” Drosten said. It’s a free choice, he said.
