The U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer is working on a drug to combat Covid-19, an anti-viral agent that people infected with the coronavirus are supposed to take at the beginning of the infection – as a kind of therapy. The tablets are supposed to kill existing coronaviruses in the body and prevent them from spreading.
This was explained by U.S. health expert Anthony Fauci in an interview with the Italian television channel RAI over the weekend. “The anti-covid vaccine in tablet form is not yet a reality, but we are working on it together with Pfizer,” he said on the program. In the program, he also promoted expanding Corona vaccinations among adolescents. He reiterated that he would also get his own grandchild vaccinated.

The new Pfizer drug belongs to the group of so-called protease inhibitors. Drugs based on this class are used, for example, in the treatment of HIV or hepatitis C. The drug is currently undergoing Phase I trials.
It is currently being tested in Phase I trials in the U.S. on healthy volunteers, and the results so far are promising. In the subsequent Phase II trial, the drug will then be tested on infected people. If this phase is also successful, large-scale Phase III trials are planned. The main focus will then be on the tolerability of the drug.
Pfizer hopes to be able to launch the drug on the market this year if it receives approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
