The “Wiener Wiesn”, a major folk event in the country’s capital city of Vienna, has to be cancelled due to the Corona pandemic. The risk would still be too high.
Fans of the Vienna Wiesn will not get their money’s worth again this year: as in the previous year, the major folk event will also be canceled in 2021. This has been communicated by the organizers on Monday. Many variants had been examined, but a folk festival worthy of the name was out of the question. The risk was too high, they said. The event usually takes place on the Kaiserwiese in the Prater.

“If the Vienna Wiesn in particular were to become a superspreader event in the fall, which many experts already classify as very critical, that would be damage to one of Austria’s strongest event brands and also to the reputation of the city of Vienna that would be almost impossible to repair. We cannot justify this,” emphasized organizer Christian Feldhofer in a press release. From an economy version with masks and distance rules one holds again nothing. Because the Viennese Wiesn demands genuine celebration, live concerts and dancing.
