In mid-May, tourism, gastronomy, leisure and culture in Austria will start again. This also means that new travel rules will apply.

The Corona traffic lights are not all switched to green yet, but travel will soon be possible again. Gastronomy in Austria had been closed for more than half a year, and this will reopen on May 19, together with tourism, culture and leisure businesses and also hotels and accommodations.

Overview of travel rules for Austria
If you want to go on vacation in Austria you will probably ask yourself what you have to take with you to be able to comply with the rules.

Travel requirements:

the FFP2 mask
a test result that is as up to date as possible or
a document proving that you have already had a Covid-19 infection or
a vaccination certificate in which your Corona vaccination is listed. Your first vaccination should be at least 21 days valid

The “Three Gs”: (geimpft, getestet und genesen) Vaccinated, tested or recovered
You must either be vaccinated, tested or recovered and be able to prove it. This proof allows you to enter restaurants, hotels and also for example events. PCR tests are valid for 72 hours, antigen tests with proof such as from the test lane or pharmacy are valid for 48 hours. Coronavirus school tests should also be considered entry tests for children.

Your vaccination is valid from the 22nd day after the first vaccination. The second partial vaccination must take place within three months. As proof are valid here e.g. vaccination certificate, vaccination card or printouts. For convalescents, e.g. a certificate of isolation or antibody test are valid. In the future, this data can also be stored in the “green passport”.

Travel rules for hotels and accommodations in Austria
With the appropriate proof you can check in e.g. in the hotel. At check-in, guests are also registered and masks are mandatory in the generally accessible interior rooms. Wellness and fitness facilities will be open again. For apartments or cottages, a one-time negative test is sufficient for the duration of the stay.

Entry rules for gastronomy in Austria
When visiting all restaurant establishments, entry tests apply again according to the 3G rule: you must be tested, vaccinated or recovered. PCR tests are again valid for 72 hours, antigen tests with proof such as from the test lane or pharmacy are valid for 48 hours and in addition there is the possibility that you can also do a registered test on site directly at the host. The test must be registered digitally. However, this test is only valid for the duration of the stay in the catering establishment. There is still no obligation to take a test for takeaways. In addition, you must register when you visit the restaurant.

Here, FFP2 mask obligation applies, at the table the mask may be taken off. A maximum of 4 people plus their children are allowed indoors, and 10 people plus their children are allowed to sit at a table in the guest garden. Closing time is at 10 p.m., so the night restaurant remains closed for the time being.
The 3 G rule also applies to many recreational facilities and it is also applied when entering Austria.

Entry rules for vacation in Austria
As of May 19, entry restrictions from many countries to Austria will be relaxed. Here it depends now on whether you enter from a safe state or a state with low or high incidence or even from virus variant states. The latter are currently South Africa and India.

As a basis for your travel and vacation planning, you can use the Corona traffic light of the EU health agency ECDC. There you can see countries and regions colored differently on the map. For green and orange colored countries, the entry should be possible without any restrictions. For entry from light red areas, a negative coronavirus test, proof of vaccination or recovery from a corona infection will be sufficient in the future. In contrast, the ten-day post-entry quarantine requirement will remain in place for those entering from dark red areas. Free testing is possible from the fifth day.

Austria travel rules from 19 May 2021

Currently, you can enter Austria from most neighboring countries and also from Germany according to the 3G rule. From Slovakia, no proof is required at all, though data can change regularly. But I assume that the situation in Europe will gradually improve.

Switzerland is missing on the map. According to information on the website of the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection, entry from Switzerland is currently possible without restrictions.

Public transport & Corona in Austria
There are only some restrictions in the Austrian train traffic. Until July 4 for the time being, there are fewer long-distance trains on the western route between Vienna and Salzburg. As part of the emergency allocation, a joint timetable of ÖBB and the private WESTbahn applies on this route. In addition, train tickets will be mutually recognized.

In international long-distance traffic, the last paused trains to and from Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic will be running again as of May 20. Most international night trains, such as EuroNight and Nightjet, will resume service on May 24. When planning your trip, keep in mind that not all night trains will be running again from that day. For example, the night train connection Vienna – Lviv – Kiev will be possible again from June 2, while the Alpen-Sylt-Nachtxpress from Westerland via Hamburg and Hanover to Salzburg will not start running until mid-July.
In all public transport and train stations in Austria, in addition to the usual hygiene measures and keep your distance, FFP2 masks are mandatory.
