On Pentecost Sunday, Pope Francis urged the faithful and the Church not to fall into a performance mindset. Only those who entrust themselves to God will find themselves, the 84-year-old head of the Catholic Church said in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. This also applies to the church. However, it does not succeed if one gives priority to his projects, structures and reform plans. Pope Francis celebrated Mass at the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica, that is why more people were able to attend.
Several hundred faithful and cardinals sat in the pews and chairs around the altar. Previously, in the Corona pandemic, many services were celebrated at the back of the cathedral and with significantly fewer participants.
Fifty days after Easter, Christians celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, bringing the Easter season to a close. It is one of the high feasts in the Catholic church year. The feast commemorates the so-called miracle of languages at Pentecost. According to biblical tradition, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples and they began to speak in foreign languages. As a result, they became one and were able to proclaim the message of Jesus to others without a language barrier. Pentecost is therefore sometimes called the “birthday of the church”.
