Ho Chi Minh City is tightening regulations to contain the pandemic following the discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus in Vietnam. Starting Monday, only events with a maximum of ten participants will be allowed to take place in the entire area of Vietnam’s economic hub, also known as Saigon, according to a report in the state-run Tuoi Tre newspaper. It is possible that the number will be reduced to five.

In addition, residents of the densely populated Go Vap district will only be allowed to leave their homes if absolutely necessary. Stores and restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City have already been closed for several days.

According to the Ministry of Health, a mixed form of the virus variants first discovered in India and those first discovered in Great Britain was found to be very dangerous. Vietnam had managed to keep the virus largely at bay for a long time, but since the end of April the country has seen an increase in infections.
