Vietnamese authorities say they have detected a new variant of the coronavirus that is spreading rapidly through the air. It is a combination of the Indian and British strains of the virus, Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long said Saturday, according to state media.
The new variant is characterized by spreading rapidly through the air, the minister said. After infection, the viral load in patients’ throats rises very quickly and then spreads very widely in the surrounding area, he said. Long did not comment on the number of patients infected with the new variant.
In Vietnam, with its 97 million inhabitants, a good 6,700 Corona infections and 47 deaths have been registered so far – most of them since April. A good one million people have been vaccinated so far.
